TANGKHUL NAGA WELFARE SOCIETY BENGALURU

The Tangkhul Naga are one of the major Naga tribes, predominantly living in Ukhrul District of Manipur, with some communities in Myanmar. With a population of around 2 Lakhs, we are spread across approximately 380 villages. Each village is rich in culture, language , and tradition, making the Tangkhul diverse yet united.

Our ancestors are believed to have migrated from Makhel, a place of origin shared by many Naga tribes. The Tangkhul language, part of the Tibeto-Burman familiy, has several dialects, but the Hunphun dialect is widely used for education and communication.

The Tangkhuls were originally animists, but the arrival of the Christian Missionaries in the late 19th Century led to mass conversion and since then, it has become central to our community life.

We are known for our colorful festivals like Luira Phanit( seed-sowing festival) , traditional dances, music, and hand woven shawls. Village councils uphold customary laws, and many civil society organisations guide and lead our community towards progress.

Beyond Manipur, Tangkhuls have made their mark across India. In Bangaluru alone, around 3500 Tangkhuls reside. Of these, nearly one-fourth are students, while the rest are engaged in various professions including IT, health care, education, hospitality, and business. The Tangkhul Naga Welfare Society Bangaluru ( TNWSB ) earlier known as Tangkhul Katamnao Long Bengalore (TKLB) established in 1986, serves as a unifying body - caring for the spiritual, cultural, and social well-being of the community. It plays in preserving identify, fostering unity, and supporting both students and working professionals living away from home.

Even as we grow with the times, we remain proud of our roots, traditions, and the strength of our people.
